How we choose, price, and verify

This is the page the rest of the site rests on. If you only read one thing here, read this — it's exactly how we do the work, and exactly what we refuse to pretend.

1. How we choose the picks

We start from the buyer's constraint — an arthritic dog, a weak back end, a slippery floor — and work out which specs actually decide whether a product helps that dog. Then we shortlist real, currently-sold products that fit, and score each against a fixed set of criteria for its category. The criteria are specific to what matters:

  • Beds: the type and depth of support foam (matched to weight), how low and open the entry is, washability, size range, and value.
  • Ramps & steps: how gentle the incline is for the height, surface grip, weight capacity, portability, and stability.
  • Mobility aids:whether the support matches the dog's specific weakness, padding, how kind the handle placement is to the owner's back, adjustability, and value.
  • Traction: grip, how well it stays on, comfort, and value.
  • Joint supplements: we deliberately do not score these on medical effectiveness (see below). We score ingredient transparency, how easy the product is to give, size suitability, and value.

The score you see on each product is a judgment built from that documented research — the published specs and aggregated owner reviews. It is a considered opinion, clearly labeled as one. It is not a lab measurement, and we never present it as an average of customer ratings.

2. How we handle specs

Every factual claim about a product — a foam type, a weight capacity, a size — traces to the manufacturer's listing, manual, or a published standard, not to memory. When a number comes from someone else's measurement, we say whose. When we can't verify a claim, we leave it out or flag it, rather than repeat it as fact. Health facts (about arthritis, mobility, pain) are cited to reputable veterinary sources, linked on the page.

3. How we handle prices

Prices are the thing our competitors get most wrong — hand-typed once and then left to rot. Ours are different by design:

  • Every price is pulled live from the Amazon Product API.
  • Each is stamped with the date it was verified.
  • If our price data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappearsand the button falls back to "Check price on Amazon." We would rather show you nothing than a stale figure.
  • We never display a remembered, hard-coded, or last-known price. Not once.

4. What we refuse to claim

This is the honest core of the site, and it's a list of claims we won't make — because they're the ones everyone else in this category makes and can't back up:

  • We haven't lab-tested these products, and we won't write "in our testing" as though we did.
  • We don't have a vet panel, and we won't imply one. We're enthusiasts who do the homework, not clinicians.
  • We don't invent credentials, ratings, review counts, or study results. If a number isn't sourced, it isn't on the page.
  • We don't take payment for placement. No brand can buy a ranking, and no commission rate changes one.

Here are the numbers where zero is the honest answer, and we're glad of it: products we claim to have tested: 0. Sponsored placements: 0. Free products accepted: 0.

5. Health, and where we stop

A lot of senior-dog gear brushes up against health. Our rule is simple: we recommend comfortgear, we do not diagnose or treat. Every health-adjacent page carries a visible note deferring to your vet, and we exclude purely medical-diagnostic topics entirely. If your dog's condition changed suddenly, that's a vet conversation before it's a shopping one — we say so, every time.

6. How we stay current

We re-verify each roundup on a regular cadence — prices, availability, and whether the top pick is still the best pick. The "last verified" date on a page reflects a real check; we don't fake freshness by bumping a date on every deploy. When a product is discontinued or a price spikes, we swap the pick and say so.

7. How we make money

Grey & Gentle is funded by the Amazon Associates program — a commission on qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. That's the whole model, spelled out on our affiliate disclosurepage. Because we rank buyer-first, you will find cheaper products ranked above pricier ones that would pay us more. That's the point.
