How to measure your dog for mobility gear

Mobility gear is the one category on this site where the right product in the wrong size is useless, and occasionally harmful. A harness that slips rubs. A brace that is loose does nothing and slides down. A wheelchair set at the wrong height puts a dog on its toes.
Almost none of this is difficult. It just has to be done before you order, with a soft tailor's tape, on a standing dog, and written down.
Before you start
Measure a standing dog. Every measurement changes when a dog lies down or sits. If your dog cannot stand unaided, have someone support it under the belly in a normal standing posture while you measure.
Use a soft tape, not a rigid one. A dressmaker's tape follows the body; a builder's tape does not. If you only have string, mark it and lay it flat against a ruler.
Snug, not tight. The tape should sit against the coat without compressing it. Pulling it tight gives you a number that produces a harness that will rub.
Write everything down in inches and centimeters. Manufacturers mix units freely and converting under time pressure is where mistakes happen.
The core measurements
1. Chest girth
The single most-used number. Measure around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with the tape passing over the deepest part of the chest. This drives sizing for almost every harness and sling.
2. Weight
Not a measurement you can eyeball. Weigh your dog properly — most vet practices will let you use their scales for free. Every lifting product has a capacity, and every brace chart uses weight as a cross-check against girth.
3. Back length
From the base of the neck (where a collar sits) to the base of the tail. This sets the length of full-body harnesses and the frame length of a wheelchair.
4. Hock height (for wheelchairs)
From the floor to the top of the hock — the backwards-bending joint on the hind leg. This is the number wheelchair makers use to set the axle height, and getting it wrong is the most common cart fitting error.
5. Limb circumference (for braces)
For a knee brace: around the thigh above the stifle and around the leg below it. For a carpal brace: around the forearm above the wrist. Measure both legs — they are often different, especially if one has lost muscle.
6. Waist or hip girth
Around the narrowest part in front of the hips. Rear slings and hip braces use this, and it is the measurement most likely to change as a dog loses muscle over the months.
The mistakes that cause most returns
Sizing by breed. "Labrador size" is not a size. Two labradors can differ by 30 lbs and several inches of girth.
Sizing by weight alone. Weight is a cross-check, not a size. A lean, deep-chested greyhound and a stocky bulldog can weigh the same and need entirely different harnesses.
Measuring over a thick winter coat. Measure to the body, and remember the coat will change through the year.
Measuring an old set of numbers. A dog losing mobility is usually also losing muscle over the hips and thighs. Numbers from six months ago are not current.
Ordering the wrong side. Most single-leg braces are left or right specific. Check which leg, twice, before you press buy.
Checking the fit once it arrives
The two-finger rule. You should be able to slide two fingers flat under any strap. Fewer and it is too tight; more and it will shift and rub.
Watch it move, not just stand. Fit a harness and walk your dog for two minutes. Most sizing faults only appear in motion — a strap creeping into an armpit, a brace migrating down a thigh, a sling rotating around the belly.
Check the skin after every early session. Take the gear off and look. Transient pink that fades in a couple of minutes is normal; redness that persists, hair loss or any break in the skin means the fit is wrong. Older dogs have thin skin and heal slowly.
Re-check monthly. Muscle wastage changes the numbers. A harness that fit perfectly in spring can be loose by autumn on a dog that has stopped exercising.

If your dog is between sizes
For harnesses and slings, size up — you can tighten a strap but you cannot add material. For braces, size down or ask the maker, because a loose brace supports nothing and will migrate. When a manufacturer offers a fitting service or a sizing email, use it; the good ones are genuinely helpful and it is free.
Wheelchairs deserve extra care
A cart is the one item where a poor fit can actively harm — the wrong axle height puts a dog on its toes, and the wrong length throws its balance forward onto already-tired front legs. Measure twice, buy from a maker with a documented fitting process, and expect to spend time adjusting after it arrives.
